Fitness in Kyoto: Best Gyms for Digital Nomads
Kyoto is a city that invites you to slow down, but for digital nomads staying here for a few weeks, keeping a routine is essential. The city is very walkable, but if you need more than just steps, there are plenty of ways to stay fit without breaking the bank.
The absolute best thing about Kyoto for fitness is the Kamo River. The paths on both sides of the river run for miles through the center of the city. It is the perfect place for a morning run or a bike ride. You can follow the river all the way north towards the mountains or south towards Fushimi. It is completely flat, away from traffic, and incredibly scenic. I spent most of my mornings running along the Kamo, watching the herons and the early morning commuters. It is easily the best free gym in the city.
If you need a proper weight room, the big commercial gyms like Anytime Fitness are everywhere in Kyoto, and they are convenient if you already have a global membership. However, they can be pricey for short-term visitors. My secret tip for nomads is to use the Kyoto City Gymnasium or the ward sports centers. The Nakagyo Ward Gymnasium, for example, is very central and has a decent weight room that you can use for a small one-time fee. You do not need a long-term contract, just your passport and some indoor shoes. It is a very local experience, and the facilities are usually excellent.
For those who prefer a more mindful approach, Kyoto is obviously a great place for yoga and meditation. Many temples offer early morning zazen sessions, which are a great way to work on your mental fitness. There are also several international yoga studios in the Sanjo and Shijo areas that offer classes in English. Kyoto is not about high-intensity shouting and loud music. It is a place where your workout should feel as balanced and intentional as the city itself.
