Phuket has become a global hub for CrossFit. From the original boxes in Chalong to boutique lifting spots, here is our personal guide to the best places to WOD on the island.

Phuket has quietly become a massive hub for CrossFit. I've spent plenty of mornings sweating through my shirt in Chalong, and the quality of the boxes here is high.

If you're here for a quick training holiday or a total lifestyle shift, these are the spots where I actually train.

CrossFit Chalong

Located in the heart of Chalong, this is the one that started it all. If you want a proper, no-nonsense CrossFit experience, this is the place. They run a tight schedule of WODs, Olympic lifting, and skill clinics. You'll find a mix of long-term expats and travelers. I really like their open gym hours for when I want to follow my own programming.

CrossFit Siam

Near the Bypass Road, this is one of the most respected boxes in Thailand. The coaches here actually pay attention to your form, rather than just shouting numbers at you from across the room. The atmosphere is competitive, but people are welcoming. They offer heavy programming for advanced athletes, but they're just as good at scaling things down for beginners.

Unit 27 Total Conditioning

On Soi Ta-ied in Chalong, Unit 27 isn't a traditional 'box' in the strictest sense. It's a massive conditioning center that mixes CrossFit-style workouts with serious strength programming and HIIT. The air-conditioning is a lifesaver in the Phuket heat. It's more expensive than a standard box, but you're paying for the high-end equipment and that cold air.

Motus Cultura CrossFit

If you care more about your snatch technique than your WOD time, go to Motus. The coaches have competitive lifting backgrounds and it shows. They have dedicated lifting platforms and a good balance between heavy barbell work and conditioning. It's located near Phuket Town, so it's a bit of a trek if you're staying in Rawai, but worth it for the coaching.

Lyuten Fitness

Lyuten has more of a boutique feel. The classes are small enough that the coaches actually know your name and your personal records. It's a nice change from the 'mega-gyms' in Chalong. If you're worried about getting lost in a crowd, Lyuten is a fantastic choice.

DynamicClub Phuket

This is a hybrid option with CrossFit and Muay Thai under one roof. It's perfect if you can't decide between hitting a WOD or hitting pads. I see a lot of professional fighters here working on their conditioning alongside recreational athletes.

Tiger Muay Thai

On Soi Ta-ied, Tiger is a machine. It's basically a combat sports city, but their functional fitness side is surprisingly strong. They have equipment you just won't find in smaller boxes, and you'll be training with people from all over the world. Just be prepared for large class sizes during the high season.

What it costs

A drop-in will usually cost you between 500 and 800 THB. If you're staying longer, weekly passes are around 2,000 to 3,500 THB, and monthly memberships go from 5,000 to 10,000 THB. Places like Unit 27 and Tiger are at the top end of that price range.

Advice from a local

Don't just show up. Message the box first, especially for morning classes which can book out. If you're picky about your grips or wraps, bring your own because rental gear is hit-or-miss.

Most importantly: leave your ego at the door. Scaling a workout because of the 90% humidity isn't a failure; it's just being smart. Nobody cares about your PR if you end up with heatstroke. The 6:00 AM classes are the only real way to avoid the brutal heat, while the 5:00 PM sessions usually have the best energy.

You will sweat more than you ever thought possible. Drink water constantly and grab those orange electrolyte sachets from any 7-Eleven, they are the best. Give yourself a few days to adjust before you try to smash any records.
