Kickboxing in Phuket: How It Differs from Muay Thai and Where to Train
Kickboxing and Muay Thai often get mixed up in Phuket, but they are different sports with different rules and techniques. If you specifically want to train kickboxing instead of Muay Thai, you have to look a bit harder.
Kickboxing and Muay Thai often get mixed up in Phuket, but they are different sports with different rules and techniques. If you specifically want to train kickboxing instead of Muay Thai, you have to look a bit harder. Most camps here are built for Muay Thai, but there are a few excellent spots for kickboxing if you know where to go.
What is the actual difference?
Muay Thai is the "Art of Eight Limbs." You use your fists, elbows, knees, and shins. It also involves a lot of "clinching," which is standing wrestling where you throw knees and off-balance your opponent. Kickboxing (like K-1 or Western styles) is usually the "Art of Four Limbs." You only use fists and kicks. There are no elbows, no knees, and no clinching allowed.
Dutch-style kickboxing is also popular in some Phuket gyms. It focuses more on aggressive boxing combinations that end with a low kick. If your goal is to compete in kickboxing, you need a coach who knows these specific rules, rather than a Muay Thai trainer who just tells you "no elbows today."
If you are just training for fitness, the difference matters less. Both will get you in incredible shape. Both involve hitting pads, heavy bags, and optional sparring.
Where to train kickboxing in Phuket
Phuket Top Team in Kathu is probably the most well-rounded striking gym on the island. They have dedicated coaches for K-1 and Dutch kickboxing as well as Muay Thai and MMA. It is a large, professional facility that attracts pro fighters from all over. Expect to pay between 9,000 and 14,000 THB for a monthly package, or 500 to 600 THB for a drop-in class.
Tiger Muay Thai in Chalong also has striking coaches with solid kickboxing backgrounds. Their program is very structured, making it easy to focus on one style or the other. Monthly packages start around 9,500 THB for two sessions a day. Because it is so big, you will always find sparring partners at your skill level.
Phuket Fight Club is a smaller, more personal option in Chalong. They are great if you want more direct feedback from the coaches rather than being just another person in a huge class. Rates are usually between 7,000 and 9,000 THB a month.
Muay Thai gyms that can accommodate you
If you just want to work on your striking and fitness, a standard Muay Thai gym is perfectly fine. Rawai Muay Thai is a friendly spot in the south that is happy to work with you on whatever you want to focus on. They have morning and afternoon sessions and charge about 400 to 500 THB for a drop-in.
Sitsongpeenong in Chalong is another one to consider. It is a traditional Thai camp, but they have very technical coaching. If you want to learn "clean" technique from the ground up, this is a top choice.
What a typical training day looks like
Most gyms run two sessions a day: 6:30 to 8:30 AM and 4:00 to 6:00 PM. A typical session goes like this:
- Jump rope for 15-20 minutes to warm up
- Shadow boxing
- 3 to 5 rounds of pad work with a trainer
- Heavy bag work
- Conditioning (push-ups, sit-ups, etc.) at the end
A note on gear
Gyms provide the pads, but you should have your own gloves and hand wraps. You can buy them at the gym, but you will save money by going to a local fight shop in Chalong. Brands like Twins, Fairtex, and Yokkao are all made in Thailand and are much cheaper here than back home. A good pair of Fairtex gloves will cost you about 1,400 to 1,800 THB.
What to expect as a beginner
Do not be intimidated. These gyms see beginners every single day. The coaches are used to working with people who have never hit a bag before. You do not need to be "in shape" to start; that is what the training is for. You will definitely be sore after your first week, but by the third week, your body will start to adapt. Pad work with a professional Thai trainer is an experience you won't find anywhere else, and it is the best reason to train here in Phuket.
