Personal training in Phuket is affordable and world-class, but the quality varies. Here is our guide to costs, trainer tiers, and how to find the right coach for your goals.

Phuket is a great place to hire a personal trainer. You can find high-quality coaching for a fraction of the cost in Western cities.

There is a wide range of trainers here, from former Muay Thai champions to specialized sports scientists. However, the quality varies, so it's worth knowing what to look for.

Training costs

Phuket generally falls into three price tiers for 1-on-1 coaching:

1. The Budget Tier (800 – 1,000 THB per session)

This is usually where you'll find independent Thai trainers or expats who are just starting out. It is best for basic accountability and having someone to spot you. The catch is that you might not get a deeply scientific program, and English levels vary.

2. The Mid-Range (1,200 – 1,500 THB per session)

This is the most common choice. You are getting qualified trainers (often with NASM or ACE certifications) who have a proven track record. This level is good for body transformations, weight loss, and strength gains. The best trainers in this bracket often book up during the high season (December to March).

3. The Premium Tier (1,800 – 2,500+ THB per session)

This is for elite expertise. We are talking about specialists in injury rehab, competition prep, or high-performance sports. This is the choice if you have very specific goals or are recovering from a serious injury.

Pro Tip: Almost every trainer offers a discount if you buy a 10 or 20-session package, usually about 10-15% off. Do not buy a large package until you have done at least one trial session to see if their style works for you.

Different styles of training in Phuket

Muay Thai private sessions

Many people come to Phuket specifically for this. Private Muay Thai training is intense. Unlike a group class where you might spend half the time hitting a heavy bag, a private session is 60 minutes of focused pad work and technique. Expect to pay between 1,000 and 2,000 THB. Specific 'name' trainers at big camps like Tiger or Bangtao usually charge more.

Strength and conditioning

Most of the big gyms in Chalong and Rawai have a roster of PTs. These sessions are usually 60 minutes and focus on compound lifts, functional fitness, or bodybuilding.

Yoga and Pilates

Private yoga is good if you are a beginner who feels intimidated by big classes or if you have specific mobility issues. Many instructors will come directly to your villa or condo.

Where do you train?

You have a few options. You can go to the trainer's gym (they usually have a home base at one of the bigger commercial gyms). If your accommodation has a decent gym, many trainers will travel to you. Check if your building has rules about external trainers first. While the beach is good for photos, it is usually too hot for a serious workout. Save the beach for a sunset run.

How to spot a good trainer

A good trainer will ask about your injuries and training history before the first session. they should write things down and track your progress. If they are not tracking your weights, they are not 'training' you; they are just exercising next to you. They should also focus on your form more than the weight on the bar.

Red flags: they spend time on their phone during your sets, they try to sell you many supplements in the first week, or they give the exact same workout to every client regardless of their goals.

My advice for your first week

If you are coming to Phuket for a short trip, do not over-commit. Book a single session with two or three different trainers in your first few days. See who you vibe with. If you do not enjoy the person coaching you, you are not going to stick with the program. Once you find the right match, grab a 10-session pack and get to work.
