Krabi Fitness Guide: Rock Climbing, Muay Thai, and Gyms for Active Visitors
Krabi is famous for rock climbing, but there are also gyms, Muay Thai camps, yoga studios, and outdoor training options worth knowing about. Here is the full picture.
Krabi is primarily known as a rock climbing destination, but the province has more to offer fitness-minded visitors than most people realise. Between the climbing walls and the beaches, there are gyms, Muay Thai camps, and training facilities worth knowing about before you arrive.
Rock Climbing as Fitness Training
Krabi is one of the best sport climbing destinations in Southeast Asia. Railay Beach and Ton Sai have established climbing areas with routes from beginner to advanced, all within short walking distance of accommodation. The rock is limestone, which means pockets, crimps, and technical footwork rather than pure power climbing.
If you have not climbed before, half-day and full-day courses with certified guides run regularly from both beaches. Completing a beginner course and doing a few multi-pitch routes in a week constitutes serious upper body and grip training. Long-time climbers visiting from Phuket often make the trip specifically for several days of intensive outdoor climbing.
Equipment rental is available on site. Your own climbing shoes will make a noticeable difference if you climb seriously, but rental shoes are usable for most routes at beginner to intermediate level.
Gyms in Krabi Town and Ao Nang
Krabi Town (the mainland administrative centre) and Ao Nang (the main beach resort area) both have commercial gyms. These are functional facilities with free weights, machines, and cardio equipment, but not as developed as what you would find in Phuket or Bangkok. Expect day pass rates in the 150-250 THB range.
Some larger hotels in Ao Nang have fitness centres that are usable for guests, and occasionally accessible to non-guests for a fee. If your accommodation has a decent gym, that may be the simplest option for pure weight training during a shorter stay.
The gym scene in Krabi is growing alongside the increasing expat and long-stay tourist population, but it remains modest. If access to a fully equipped facility is critical, Phuket (roughly 2-3 hours by road or ferry) is the better base for serious gym training.
Muay Thai in Krabi
There are Muay Thai camps operating in the Krabi area, though the scene is smaller than in Phuket or Chiang Mai. Several camps run classes for visitors who want to try the sport during their holiday, as well as more structured training packages for people who want to train seriously for a week or two.
Camps in the Ao Nang area are the most accessible for tourists. Training follows the standard format: group sessions in the morning and late afternoon, with private coaching available at extra cost. Group sessions are often small enough that you get reasonable individual attention from coaches.
If you want to do fight preparation or high-intensity sparring, ask specifically before signing up. Camps that primarily serve casual visitors are not always set up for this, and they will usually tell you honestly if they are not the right fit.
Yoga and Other Training
Yoga studios and wellness centres are scattered through Ao Nang and Railay. Quality and style vary, but the supply of classes is reasonable for a destination of Krabi's size. Drop-in rates are competitive, and several studios offer week-long programs for visitors who want a structured schedule.
Kayaking around the limestone karsts is common as a leisure activity, but it is also genuinely good paddling exercise. Half-day and full-day trips are available through most guesthouses and tour operators in Ao Nang. The mangrove routes in particular involve consistent effort over several hours.
Trail running is possible on Ko Lanta (accessible by ferry from Krabi) and around the national park areas on the mainland. Routes are not formally marked in most cases, so this suits self-sufficient runners comfortable navigating on foot.
Getting Around for Training
Krabi Town and Ao Nang are connected by road, and most gyms and camps are reachable by scooter or songthaew. Railay and Ton Sai are accessible only by longtail boat, which is part of their appeal but limits what you can bring with you (large bags of gym gear become inconvenient).
If you are planning to combine serious gym training with climbing or beach activities, basing yourself in Ao Nang gives the best access to all of it. Railay is better if climbing is the primary goal and you are comfortable with the boat-only access.
Combining Krabi With Phuket
Many fitness visitors to Thailand use Krabi as a short side trip from Phuket. The two destinations are roughly 2.5-3 hours apart by road, or closer to 90 minutes by speedboat from Ao Nang to various Phuket piers. A few days in Krabi for climbing and outdoor activity, combined with a longer stay in Phuket for gym training and Muay Thai, is a route that makes practical sense. The contrast between the two settings is genuinely worthwhile.
