Bangkok is not the first place you think of for an outdoor workout. Between the humidity, the traffic, and the broken sidewalks, it can be a challenge. But the city has actually built some fantastic park spaces over the last few years. If you know where to go and time it right, training outside in Bangkok is a great way to stay fit without a gym membership.

Lumphini Park (Silom)

Lumphini is the classic spot. It is right in the center of the city and offers a 2.5 kilometer loop that is perfectly paved. On any given morning between 5:30 and 7:30 AM, you will see hundreds of people here running, walking, and doing group aerobics. If you want to do a long run, 4 to 6 laps is the standard.

There is also an "old school" outdoor gym near the park perimeter. It has pull-up bars, dip stations, and basic weight machines. It is free to use, just be prepared for the heat. By 9:00 AM, the sun is usually too strong for intense work. If you are there early, you can also grab fresh fruit or a coconut from the vendors nearby.

Benjakitti Park (Asok)

This is my favorite park in Bangkok. It was expanded in 2022 and now features a massive "Forest Park" section. There is a 3 kilometer running track and a separate bike path. The tree cover provides a bit more shade than Lumphini, and the scenery is much more modern.

The outdoor gym here is also much newer. You will find proper pull-up structures and even some cable-style resistance machines spread out in different zones. It is all free and very well-maintained. The park is connected to the Asok area by a walkway, so it is easy to get to by BTS or MRT.

Chatuchak Park (North Bangkok)

If you are in the north of the city, Chatuchak Park is the go-to. It has a 2 kilometer loop and plenty of outdoor fitness equipment. It is usually less crowded with tourists than the downtown parks. Just keep in mind that on weekends, the nearby market makes the whole area very busy, so stick to the early morning if you want a quiet run.

Rotfai Park (Wachirabenchatat)

Right next to Chatuchak is Rotfai Park. It is a bit more rugged and has a 3.5 kilometer loop around two lakes. There is a lot of tree cover here, which makes it one of the more bearable spots if you have to run a bit later in the morning. The breeze off the lakes is actually quite nice during the "cool" months from November to February.

Running routes beyond the parks

If you are bored of running in circles, there are a few other options:

  • Chao Phraya River: There is a walkway from Sathorn Pier toward Saphan Taksin. It is not a dedicated track, but running by the river at 6:00 AM is a unique Bangkok experience.
  • Canal Paths: In neighborhoods like Lat Phrao, there are paths along the canals that go for kilometers. You will have to dodge some scooters and market stalls, but it is a good way to see a more local side of the city.

When is the best time to go?

The timing is everything. 5:30 to 8:00 AM is the gold standard window. The temperature is usually around 27 degrees, and the humidity hasn't hit its peak yet. The second window is 5:30 to 7:30 PM, but you will be dealing with more mosquitoes and the leftover heat from the day.

I also recommend checking the AQI (air quality) app, especially during the first few months of the year. If the pollution is high, stick to an indoor gym with air filtration.

Practical tips

Outdoor gyms are free, but bring a small towel to wipe down the equipment. Hydration is non-negotiable. Luckily, there is a 7-Eleven or a local vendor within a few minutes of every park entrance. Get a bottle of water and an electrolyte drink (like Sponsor or 100Plus) before you start.

Finally, if you see a group of Thai aunties doing aerobics to loud techno music in the park, feel free to join in. It is free, fun, and a very "Bangkok" way to get your cardio done.
