Best Gyms in Yangon: A Guide for Travelers

Traveling to Yangon is an experience like no other, but it can be a bit of a shock to your fitness routine. Between the traffic, the humidity, and the occasional power outages, finding a place to work out requires a bit of planning. The good news is that the city has some surprisingly high-quality gyms if you know where to look.

If you want the best of the best, you go to Balance Fitness. It has two main locations and both are excellent. They have top-tier equipment, plenty of space, and they actually maintain their machines. It is the kind of place where you can get a proper workout without feeling like you are fighting for space. Real Fitness is another great choice, particularly their Golden Valley branch. It is a bit more expensive, but it feels very modern and clean. Both of these gyms are well-equipped to handle the frequent power cuts in Yangon because they have heavy-duty generators. This is a huge factor to consider because there is nothing worse than being mid-set and having the lights and AC cut out.

For those on a tighter budget or just staying for a few days, many of the mid-range hotels in the downtown area have decent gyms. They are usually small, but they are convenient. However, if you really want to see how the locals stay fit, head over to Kandawgyi Park in the early morning. You will see hundreds of people walking, running, and doing group exercises with the Shwedagon Pagoda in the background. It is one of the most beautiful places to run in Asia, although you do have to watch your step on some of the older wooden boardwalks.

One thing to keep in mind is the dress code. Myanmar is still quite conservative, so while big gyms like Balance are used to seeing typical Western gym gear, it is always respectful to cover up a bit more when you are traveling to and from your workout. Stick to these spots and you will have no trouble keeping your gains while exploring Yangon.
