Best Gyms in Vientiane: A Guide for Travelers

Vientiane is often overlooked in favor of the more scenic parts of Laos, but the capital has a surprisingly strong fitness culture. I find the city very easy to navigate on foot or by bike, and there are several gyms that cater to travelers. It is a sleepy city, but it has everything you need to stay in shape while you are passing through.

Commercial vs local gyms

Sengdara Fitness is the biggest and best known gym in the city. It is a massive facility that feels more like a sports club than just a gym. They have a large weight room, a swimming pool, a sauna, and even a coffee shop. It is popular with the expat community and the local middle class. It is the most expensive option in town, but it is also the most professional. If you want a western style experience, this is where you go.

For a more local experience, I recommend Vientiane Fitness Center. It is located in the heart of the city and is much more basic. It is fan cooled, which can be tough in the middle of the day, but it has a good range of equipment. The daily rate is very affordable, usually around 25,000 Kip. It is a great place to meet local fitness enthusiasts and get a good workout without spending too much. The vibe is very focused and people are there to work.

Pool options

Since Vientiane can get incredibly hot, having access to a pool is a life saver. If your guesthouse does not have one, the Muong Thanh Luxury Hotel allows outside guests to use their pool for a daily fee. It is one of the best pools in the city and offers a great view from the top of the building. It is a perfect way to recover after a morning workout or a long day of sightseeing. There are also public pools, but they can get very crowded with kids in the afternoons.

Riverside running

The best place for cardio in Vientiane is the Mekong riverfront. There is a long, paved path that runs along the river for several kilometers. In the early morning and late evening, the path is filled with joggers, walkers, and people doing aerobics. The sunset views across the river to Thailand are beautiful. I usually aim to run around 5 pm when the temperature starts to drop and the night market begins to set up nearby. The energy there is infectious.

Practical tips

Most gyms in Vientiane are open early, often around 6 am, and close by 8 or 9 pm. Prices are usually quoted in Lao Kip, but some larger places might accept Thai Baht or US Dollars. It is always better to have Kip on hand for the smaller local gyms. Water is essential, so make sure you carry a bottle with you, as not all local gyms have filtered water dispensers. Dress code is generally casual, but out of respect for local culture, try not to walk around the city in just a sports bra or without a shirt.

Conclusion

Vientiane might be quiet, but its fitness scene is solid. Whether you want a luxury club like Sengdara or a simple sunset run along the Mekong, you can easily maintain your health while enjoying the relaxed pace of life in the Lao capital.
