Fitness in Makassar: A Guide for Travelers

Makassar is where most people start their trip to Eastern Indonesia. It is a city known for its seafood and its popular waterfront. For travelers visiting South Sulawesi, staying active in Makassar is quite easy thanks to a mix of modern fitness centers and outdoor spaces.

Gyms in the Losari Area

Most travelers stay near the Losari Beach area (Pantai Losari). This is the center of the city and has the most convenient options for a quick workout.

Celebrity Fitness (Mall Ratu Indah)

Located in Mall Ratu Indah (MaRI), this is the best-equipped gym in the city. It is a short taxi or Gojek ride from the waterfront. Like other locations in Indonesia, it has high-quality equipment, clean facilities, and many classes. A day pass usually costs around 175,000 IDR. This is the best choice if you want a reliable, air-conditioned environment.

Phinisi Point Gyms

The Phinisi Point (PiPo) mall is right on the waterfront. It often has boutique fitness studios or smaller gym facilities. These spots are modern and sometimes provide views of the ocean while you train. Look out for fitness events that happen in the mall’s atrium on weekends.

Outdoor Fitness: Running the Coast

If you prefer fresh air, Makassar has one of the best urban running spots in the region.

Losari Beach Waterfront

The promenade along Losari Beach is a favorite for local runners. The best time to go is just before sunrise. You can run for several kilometers along the paved path with the sea on one side and the city on the other. On Sunday mornings, parts of the main road are often closed for "Car Free Day," making it a great space for running and cycling.

Fort Rotterdam

For a scenic spot, the area around Fort Rotterdam is also good for a jog. The fort is a 17th-century Dutch colonial structure, and the surrounding streets are flat and easy to navigate.

Local and Mid-Range Options

Outside the major malls, you will find independent gyms, especially in the Panakkukang area. These gyms are generally more affordable, with day passes ranging from 30,000 to 70,000 IDR. They might not have the newest machines, but they usually have a good selection of free weights and a friendly community atmosphere.

Tips for Staying Fit in Makassar

  1. Sun Protection: The sun in Makassar is intense. If you are running outdoors, finish your workout by 8 AM to avoid the heat.
  2. Post-Workout Recovery: After your gym session, try some "Pisang Epe" (grilled bananas) or a fresh coconut from a stall along Losari Beach.
  3. Transport: Use the Gojek or Grab apps to get to gyms. It is much easier than flagging down a taxi.
  4. Hydration: Humidity is high here. Drink more water than usual, especially if you are training outdoors.

Makassar is a busy port city, but its fitness scene is active. Whether you want a high-end mall gym or a sunrise run along the coast, there are plenty of ways to keep moving while exploring South Sulawesi.
