Koh Samui has matured from a backpacker island into a serious wellness destination. While Phuket still has the most gyms per square kilometer, Samui offers a more relaxed, boutique fitness environment, often attracting those who seek fitness retreats without the high-intensity atmosphere of Phuket. That dynamic appeals to travelers who want to balance hard training with a high-end holiday experience.

Fitness on Koh Samui

Fitness on Koh Samui is concentrated in three main areas: Chaweng, Lamai, and Bophut. Chaweng is the busiest, with the most commercial gym options. Lamai has a more local feel and is home to the island's most established Muay Thai camps. Bophut and the northeast (Choeng Mon) are where you will find premium yoga studios and boutique wellness centers.

Best Gyms for Weightlifting and Cardio

Elite Gym (Chaweng)

Elite is widely considered the best-equipped commercial gym on the island. It features modern Hammer Strength equipment, a dedicated cardio area, and a solid selection of free weights. It is air-conditioned, a major plus during the Samui summer. Day passes are around 300-400 THB, with monthly memberships landing near 2,500 THB.

Lamai Fitness

A more hardcore bodybuilding-style gym located in Lamai. It is open-air, meaning you will sweat significantly more than at Elite, but it has a great community vibe and all the essential plate-loaded machines and dumbbells you need for a serious lift. Prices are slightly lower than in Chaweng, around 200-250 THB for a day pass.

Superpro Samui (Chaweng)

Superpro is a hybrid facility that combines a traditional gym with Muay Thai and MMA training. It has a large outdoor functional training area and a decent indoor weight room. It is a good choice if you want to mix lifting with combat sports in the same session.

Muay Thai Training Camps

Lamai Muay Thai

One of the oldest and most respected camps on the island. They train all levels, from complete beginners to active fighters. The training is authentic but accessible. For a deep dive into Samui's combat sports scene, see our complete guide to Koh Samui Muay Thai camps.

Jun Muay Thai (Lamai)

A smaller, family-run gym that offers very personalized instruction. If you find the larger Phuket camps intimidating, Jun is a solid alternative. The head trainer, Jun, is known for his technical precision and patient coaching style.

Yoga and Pilates Studios

Vikasa Yoga (Lamai)

Vikasa is a well-known yoga retreat perched on the cliffs between Chaweng and Lamai. The views from the yoga sala are genuinely impressive. They offer daily drop-in classes for around 500-600 THB. It is a proper experience, not just a workout.

The Yoga Garden (Bophut)

Located in a quiet garden setting near Fisherman's Village, this studio offers a variety of Hatha, Vinyasa, and Yin classes. It is a peaceful escape from the busier parts of the island.

CrossFit and Functional Fitness

Samui does not have as many CrossFit affiliates as Phuket, but functional fitness is growing. Many Muay Thai camps, like Superpro, have added functional zones with kettlebells, racks, and turf. For dedicated CrossFit, check for local community boxes that pop up in the Maenam area.

Recovery and Wellness

Samui does well at recovery. From high-end spas to local massage shops (300 THB/hour), your muscles will be well-cared for. Many fitness enthusiasts head to the herbal steam saunas in Lamai for post-training recovery, a traditional Thai experience that is both cheap and effective.

Samui vs. Phuket: Which is better?

If you want sheer variety and top-level competition, Phuket wins. But if you want a more integrated experience where your gym is five minutes from a beautiful beach and a good cafe, Samui is hard to beat. For a side-by-side breakdown, read our Phuket vs Bangkok vs Samui comparison.
