Best Gyms in Vientiane: A Guide for Expats

Vientiane is probably the quietest capital city in Southeast Asia, and the fitness scene reflects that slower pace. It is not as flashy as Bangkok, but for expats living here, there are a few reliable spots that make staying in shape a lot easier.

The big name in town is Sengdara Fitness. This is where most of the expat community and wealthy locals end up. It is a huge complex with a gym, sauna, and a massive swimming pool. The equipment is modern and they have a good range of classes like spinning and yoga. It feels more like a social club than just a gym, which is nice if you are new to the city. The downside is the price, as it is easily the most expensive option in Laos.

If you want something a bit more focused on actual training, Vientiane Fitness Center is a great alternative. It is more central and has a solid selection of free weights and machines. It does not have the resort vibe of Sengdara, but it is perfect for a straightforward workout. The crowd there is a mix of serious local lifters and travelers.

Because of the heat in Vientiane, swimming is a huge part of the fitness culture. Many expats skip the gym entirely and just use the pools at hotels like the Settha Palace or the Mercure. You can usually pay a small fee for a day pass. It is a much more relaxed way to get your cardio in. Also, do not overlook the Mekong riverfront. In the evenings, the promenade fills up with people walking and running. It is the best place to catch a breeze and see the sunset while getting some steps in.
