Fitness in Luang Prabang: Best Spots for a Nature Workout

Luang Prabang is not a city where you want to be stuck inside a dark gym. The whole place is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the best way to stay fit here is to get outside and move with the rhythm of the town.

My morning routine usually starts with a run along the Nam Khan river. There is a dirt path that follows the water, and it is much quieter than the main streets. You get to see the mist rising off the hills and the locals starting their day. It is peaceful and far more rewarding than any treadmill session. If you want a real burn, head to Mount Phousi. Most tourists go there at sunset for the view, but if you go early in the morning, you can run the three hundred or so steps to the top. It is a brutal leg workout, especially if you do a few laps.

If you absolutely need weights, there are a couple of basic local gyms on the outskirts of the old town. Do not expect much. They are usually just open-air sheds with some old rusty plates and a few benches. But they have character, and they are incredibly cheap. Most of the time, I find that a combination of bodyweight exercises by the river and long walks through the town is enough.

Cycling is another great option. You can rent a bike for a few dollars and ride out to the Kuang Si Falls. It is about thirty kilometers round trip with some decent hills. It is a tough ride in the heat, but the swim in the turquoise pools at the end makes it all worth it. Luang Prabang is about slow fitness. It is about functional movement in a beautiful setting rather than chasing personal records in a gym.
