Fitness in Mandalay: Best Gyms and Parks
Mandalay is a city that moves at a different speed than Yangon. It is flatter, more spread out, and it feels much more traditional. When it comes to fitness, the city centers around one iconic landmark: the Moat surrounding the Royal Palace.
Every morning at sunrise and every evening at sunset, the perimeter of the Moat becomes a massive outdoor gym. The total distance around it is about eight kilometers, making it a perfect loop for a long run or a power walk. The path is paved, and you will be joined by thousands of locals of all ages. There are even basic pull-up bars and stretching stations set up at various points. It is easily my favorite place to get some cardio in because you have the fortress walls on one side and the water on the other. It is much cooler near the water, which is a blessing in the Mandalay heat.
If you prefer a traditional gym setting, Fitway Gym is one of the most popular spots in town. It is well-managed and has a good selection of free weights and cardio machines. The atmosphere is very welcoming to foreigners, and the staff generally knows their stuff. It is a solid place to go if you need a proper squat rack or a bench press. Another option is to check out some of the local weightlifting clubs, which are much more basic but have a great, raw energy.
For a real challenge, you have to hike up Mandalay Hill. It is not exactly a gym workout, but the climb up the covered stairways will definitely get your heart rate up. There are over one thousand steps to the top, and if you do it at a fast pace, your legs will be burning by the time you reach the pagoda at the summit. The reward is a panoramic view of the city and the Irrawaddy River. It is a great way to combine sightseeing with a serious leg day. Just remember to take your shoes off at the entrance and carry them with you.
