A runner's guide to Phuket: Coastal routes and parks\n\nPhuket is a great place to run if you know where to look. While the main roads are busy and sidewalks are hit-or-miss, the island has some excellent coastal paths and parks. Running here gives you a mix of hills and flat stretches with ocean views that make the humidity a bit more bearable.\n\nHere are my favorite spots to lace up in Phuket.\n\n## Bang Wad Dam (Kathu)\n\nThis is the go-to spot for local runners and triathletes. It’s a 6.5km paved loop around a reservoir, surrounded by jungle. The path is completely car-free, which is a luxury on this island.\n\nWhat I appreciate about Bang Wad is the shade. Because it’s tucked into the hills, it stays cooler than the coast for an extra hour in the morning. It’s perfect for a steady long run. You’ll probably see monkeys along the way—they usually ignore people, but keep your distance just in case. You can find more spots nearby in our Phuket fitness finder.\n\n## Nai Harn Lake and Beach\n\nIf you want to see the ocean while you move, head south to Nai Harn. There is a 2.2km flat loop around the lake that gets busy in the early mornings. \n\nFor a bit more effort, you can extend your run up the road toward the Windmill Viewpoint. It’s a steep climb, but the view from the top is worth the sweat. After finishing, you can walk straight into the water for a cool-down. If you're looking for indoor options nearby, check out the gyms in Phuket.\n\n## Saphan Hin (Phuket Town)\n\nLocated on the edge of Phuket Town, Saphan Hin is a large seaside park with several kilometers of running and cycling paths. It’s a local favorite. In the evenings, the park is full of families, food stalls, and aerobic classes.\n\nIt’s flat and well-lit, making it a good choice if you’re running after sunset. The breeze from the bay helps with the heat.\n\n## Thanyapura (Thalang)\n\nIf you need a serious track session, Thanyapura is the place. It’s a massive sports complex with a professional 500m running track and quiet backroads surrounding the facility.\n\nMany professional athletes train here because the facilities are top-tier and the environment is peaceful. It’s further north, but for a speed session, it’s the best option on the island. \n\n## Essential running tips for Phuket\n\n* Beat the heat: The midday sun is no joke. I try to finish my runs by 8 AM or wait until after 5:30 PM. For more on managing the climate, see our survival tips for training in the heat. \n* Stay hydrated: The humidity will drain you faster than you expect. Carry water or bring some cash for a coconut from a roadside stall.\n* Watch the traffic: If you have to run on the road, always run against the traffic and stay alert. Drivers aren’t always expecting to see runners.\n* Find a crew: Phuket has a growing running community. Local Facebook groups are a good way to find people for weekend long runs.\n\nRunning in Phuket is a great way to see the island beyond the tourist strips.
