Chaweng: The Most Options, Also the Most Tourists

\\n\\n

Chaweng Beach Road and its surrounding sois have the highest concentration of gyms on the island. This is partly because it is where most tourists stay, and partly because the commercial rents support a fitness economy.

Samui Boxing Stadium in Chaweng is the island's main Muay Thai venue for both training and watching fights. They offer daily training sessions that mix tourists with genuine fighters. Lamai Muay Thai (which actually has a Chaweng location as well) charges similar rates and offers package deals for longer stays. A one-week unlimited training package is typically around 3,500-4,000 THB, which represents reasonable value if you are training twice a day.

For weight training and general gym work, there are several small independent gyms along the Chaweng Beach Road area. These typically charge 150-250 THB for a day pass. The equipment tends to be functional rather than impressive, and the air conditioning is sometimes an afterthought. That said, for maintaining a training routine rather than pushing personal records, they are fine.

Lamai: Quieter, With Decent Options

\\n\\n

Lamai is Samui's second main beach area, about 12km south of Chaweng. It is quieter and less commercially developed, which means fewer gyms but also fewer crowds.

Lamai Muay Thai Boxing Camp is the anchor fitness option in this area. It operates a proper training camp with accommodation on site, though drop-in sessions are welcome. Training here costs around 500-600 THB per session. The camp has been operating for a long time and has a more serious training culture than some of the Chaweng tourist gyms.

There are also a few small gym setups attached to hotels in the Lamai area. These are usually free for guests and available for a 100-200 THB day fee for non-guests. The equipment is usually limited to a few cardio machines, dumbbells and a cable machine, but that is often enough if you have a plan.

\\n\\n

The beach at Lamai is workable for running, particularly early morning when the tide is lower and the sand is firmer near the waterline. The stretch is about 4km, so a return run gives you roughly 8km at an easy effort.

Bophut: The Quiet North

\\n\\n

Bophut is on the north coast, home to the Fisherman's Village area. It is popular with longer-stay visitors and families, and it has a different pace from Chaweng or Lamai. Gym options are limited here compared to the other areas.

\\n\\n

Most fitness-focused visitors in Bophut either drive to Chaweng for training or work out at their resort gym. The road between Bophut and Chaweng is manageable by scooter (15-20 minutes), and most gyms on the island are accessible this way since public transport is minimal.

There is a small but growing yoga and wellness scene in the Bophut and Maenam area. Studios operating out of wellness centres offer drop-in yoga classes at around 350-500 THB. These are not large commercial studios, so schedules vary and it is worth checking their Instagram or Facebook pages for current class times before showing up.

Getting Around for Fitness

\\n\\n

This is one of the practical realities of training on Samui: you need a scooter or car. The island's public transport (songthaews that run the ring road) is too slow and infrequent to make gym commuting practical. Scooter rental costs around 200-300 THB per day or 2,500-4,000 THB per month depending on the bike.

\\n\\n

If you are planning to train consistently, factor this into where you choose to stay. Being within walking or cycling distance of a gym you like will save you both money and the hassle of daily scooter trips.

Yoga and Wellness

\\n\\n

Koh Samui has a smaller yoga scene than Koh Phangan (which is directly north and has a much more developed retreat culture). That said, several studios operate year-round on Samui.

\\n\\n

Absolute Sanctuary at Choengmon Beach (north-east of Chaweng) is the most established wellness resort on the island, offering yoga, Pilates and fitness classes. Day visitor access is available from around 500 THB per class, though their detox and retreat packages are the main draw for longer-stay guests.

\\n\\n

Independent yoga teachers operate on the island as well, running small group classes from beachside venues or gardens. These are often advertised on noticeboards at health food cafes and organic restaurants, particularly in the Fisherman's Village area. Rates for these informal sessions are usually 300-400 THB.

What to Expect vs Phuket

\\n\\n

If you are coming to Samui specifically for fitness, it is worth knowing that Phuket has a significantly more developed fitness infrastructure, more serious Muay Thai camps, more yoga studios, and more CrossFit and functional fitness options. Samui is a good place to maintain your training while enjoying an island holiday; it is not the place to base a dedicated training trip unless you have very specific reasons for being there.

That said, for travellers who are on Samui for other reasons and want to keep moving, the options covered here are perfectly adequate. A Muay Thai session at one of the Chaweng camps, morning runs on Lamai beach and a few sessions at a local gym will keep you well-covered for a week or two.
