Discover the ultimate guide to fitness in Phuket. From Muay Thai camps to yoga studios and premium gyms – find the perfect place to train on Thailand's fitness island.

Phuket went from beach resort to fitness destination over the past decade. Now you've got Muay Thai camps next to yoga studios next to CrossFit boxes. Digital nomads, pro fighters, and tourists all training side by side.

Why train in Phuket

Simple: warm weather year-round (around 28°C), costs are 50-70% lower than the West, and there's an actual community here. Unlike Bangkok's pollution or Chiang Mai's mountains, Phuket has beaches for recovery and enough healthy food options to fuel serious training.

Where to train

Rawai and Nai Harn (south)

The fitness center of the island. Most Muay Thai gyms, CrossFit boxes, and yoga studios are here. Long-term residents and digital nomads love it.

Best for Muay Thai, MMA, CrossFit, yoga. Chill, expat-heavy, training-focused. Top gyms: Rawai Muay Thai, Suwit Muay Thai.

Chalong (central-east)

More local, cheaper gyms, good massage spots for recovery. Fewer tourists than Rawai but still plenty of options. Best for budget gyms, wellness, and recovery. You'll find 24-hour gyms, spas, and physiotherapy clinics.

Bang Tao and Laguna (west)

The expensive area. Premium facilities, boutique studios, luxury wellness centers. You get what you pay for. Notable: Thanyapura Sports and Health Resort.

Patong (west coast)

Tourist central. Convenient if you're only here a week, but crowded and party-focused. Hotel gyms and commercial facilities. Not ideal for serious training.

What you can train

Muay Thai and boxing

Over 100 gyms on the island. Beginners to pro fighters. Most run two sessions daily (morning and afternoon) with padwork, bag work, clinching, and sparring. Strength and conditioning usually included. Monthly memberships: 8,000-15,000 THB.

For beginners: Tiger Muay Thai, Sinbi Muay Thai, AKA Thailand.

Yoga and wellness

Beachfront classes to week-long retreats. Drop-in classes run 400-600 THB. Good studios: Phuket Cleanse, Vikasa Yoga, Ananda Yoga.

CrossFit and functional fitness

Several CrossFit affiliates with daily WODs, Olympic lifting, metabolic conditioning. Drop-ins: 500-800 THB. Popular: Unit 27, Crossfit Patong, Phuket Fit.

Traditional gyms

24-hour gyms with cardio, free weights, and machines. Monthly starts at 1,500 THB for local gyms, 3,000-4,000 THB for chains like Fitness First or Jetts.

Swimming and triathlon

Thanks to the Laguna Phuket Triathlon, there's solid swim coaching and tri training programs on the island.

Personal training

Plenty of certified trainers. Rates: 800-2,000 THB per session depending on experience and location.

Training tips

Go easy the first week. The heat hits different. Stay hydrated, train at 70% until you adjust.

Rent a scooter. Public transport is terrible. 3,000-4,000 THB/month.

Try multiple gyms. Most offer day passes or trial weeks. Live near your gym because traffic during high season is awful.

Budget for massage. Thai massage (300-500 THB) keeps you functional after hard training weeks. Get involved with beach workouts, social runs, and fitness events that happen weekly.

If you're staying longer than 30 days, sort your visa before you arrive.

Sample week

Monday/Wednesday/Friday: 7:00 AM Muay Thai, 11:00 AM swim or rest, 4:30 PM weights or CrossFit.

Tuesday/Thursday: 8:00 AM yoga, 11:00 AM personal training or skill work, evening rest or light cardio.

Saturday: 9:00 AM long run or bike, afternoon beach workout or recovery.

Sunday: Rest. Hiking, SUP, or swimming if you feel like it.

Health and safety

Get travel insurance that covers sports and martial arts. Drink 3-4L of water daily. Train early morning or late afternoon to avoid midday sun. Check equipment condition at any new gym, and ask about trainer certifications if you're hiring one.

When to come

High season (Nov-Apr): Perfect weather, everything open, peak community. More expensive and crowded.

Low season (May-Oct): Cheaper, quieter gyms, afternoon rain (mornings usually fine). Some studios close.

Best months: November or April. Good weather, fewer people.
